📚 Essential Market Vocabulary

Bull Market
A period of rising prices and investor confidence. Generally defined as a 20%+ gain from recent lows. S&P 500 averages ~3–5 years per bull cycle.
Bear Market
A decline of 20%+ from recent highs. Usually accompanied by economic pessimism, lower earnings expectations, and high volatility.
Bid / Ask Spread
Bid = highest price a buyer will pay. Ask = lowest price a seller will accept. The spread between them is immediate transaction cost. Tighter spread = more liquid.
Volume
Number of shares traded in a period. High volume confirms price moves — a breakout on low volume is much weaker than one on high volume.
Float
Total shares available for public trading. Low-float stocks can move explosively because small trades significantly shift supply/demand balance.
Market Cap
Current share price × total shares outstanding. Large-cap (>$10B) = stable. Mid-cap ($2B–$10B) = growth potential. Small-cap (<$2B) = higher risk/reward.
P/E Ratio
Price-to-Earnings. Stock price ÷ earnings per share. Higher P/E = investors expect high growth. Compare P/E within same industry, not across sectors.
Support
A price level where buying pressure historically overcomes selling pressure. Price has bounced from this zone multiple times — a "floor" traders watch closely.
Resistance
A price level where selling pressure historically overcomes buying pressure. Price has reversed from this "ceiling" multiple times. Broken resistance becomes support.
Candlestick
A price bar showing open, close, high, and low for a time period. Green (or white) = price closed above open. Red (or black) = closed below open.
Gap Up / Gap Down
When a stock opens significantly above (gap up) or below (gap down) the prior day's close. Gaps often create strong directional momentum — or get "filled" later.
Short Selling
Borrowing shares to sell them now, hoping to buy them back cheaper later. Profit comes from price dropping. Risk is theoretically unlimited — avoid until advanced.

🔧 Order Types Reference

Order Type How It Works Best Used When Risk Level
Market Order
Use with care
Executes immediately at the best available price. No price guarantee — you get whatever the market offers. Highly liquid stocks with tight spreads. Never on pre/after-market or low-volume names. Slippage risk on volatile or low-volume stocks
Limit Order
Recommended
Sets a maximum price to buy or minimum price to sell. Only fills at your price or better — never worse. Entering and exiting trades with price control. Default order type for most disciplined traders. Low — full price control. May not fill in fast markets.
Stop Order
Caution
Triggers a market order once a stop price is hit. Converts to a market order at trigger — no price guarantee. Setting automatic stop-losses. Price can gap through your stop in fast markets. Gap-through risk. Can cause slippage on volatile opens.
Stop-Limit Order
Recommended
Triggers a limit order when stop price is hit. You keep price control but order may not fill if market gaps. Stop-loss with price control. Safer than stop-market in most conditions. Can fail to fill if price gaps past your limit.
Trailing Stop
Advanced use
Stop price automatically adjusts upward as stock price rises. Locks in profits while letting winners run. Protecting gains on winning positions. Works best in trending stocks. Can trigger prematurely in choppy, volatile markets.
